Language:  Research & Development

Objective:  Students will research the most used languages in the world.  They will write, produce and publish a magazine that celebrates the languages of the world and use their own published magazine to get a better understanding of the world and it's languages.

Language Selection:

In class students will select their chosen language.  Once selected that language will no longer be available for researching.

English is not available for research, it will be the language used as example in our published magazine; however you will be using it to answer the questionnaire on completion of publication of the magazine.​

Language Research

You should research*  and compile the following information: (Examples Highlighted in yellow on the sample page)
  • 1.  Number of native speakers
  • 2.  Number of non-native speakers
  • 3.  Total speakers of the language
  • 4.  Name of the language itself (within the chosen language)
  • 5.  Language family or Proto-language
  • 6.  Other languages related to the chosen language
  • 7.  3-5 Rules of grammar within the language.
  • 8.  Region(s), including map of the world where the language is spoken
  • 9.  5-7 important phrases in the language
  • 10. At least one insight on the language and culture
  • 11. 2-3 interesting facts about the language  (this might include a brief history of the language, idiomatic phrases, 'funky' rules, etc...)
* Be sure to keep track of your site references, i.e. the url, author, title etc...

Identify/find and source at least 4 pictures that you will utilize in the published magazine.  (Examples highlighted in green on the sample page)

Write your magazine articles  (See the example magazine for sample articles)
  • Look at the example pages, write the articles you will later upload to the magazine.
    • Articles must be well written, including correct grammar, syntax and punctuation.  They should include clear introductions, body of the text and conclusions.  Make it readable and enjoyable. 
  • Have two people (one must be an adult) edit & review your articles, make all appropriate changes
    • Editors please review the following: 
      • Spelling
      • Punctuation
      • Semantics
      • Content
      • Ensure all  requirements (see above) have been met
      • Ensure illustrations are appropriate and illustrate the concepts being highlighted  

Upload and Publish your articles (Examples highlighted in light blue in the sample page)
  • Look at the example pages to identify what your final published pages (you will have two pages in the magazine) should look like.
  • Review the Table of Contents to ensure you publish your information on correct pages of the magazine.
  • Make sure your published article...:
    • Includes headlines
    • Includes illustrations
    • Includes maps
    • Includes all of the required information (see above)
    • Is neat,
    • Is not too busy, nor too boring
    • The format you have selected is creative and interesting to view
    • Is properly spelled and/or punctuated
