Week 4 Block 3: Online Learning

​Objective: In order to understand language you must first understand terms related to language, for example cognates, grammatical terms such as syntax, dialect etc... Understanding and knowing these terms will improve your ability to  understand, and use a secondary language

The Power of Cognates

Objective: Cognates make our ability to understand, and use a secondary language much easier.  In this lesson you will learn how to: 1)  Define what a "Cognate" is.  2)  Determine how cognates can facilitate (help) your language learning.  3) Identify common cognates in various global languages.  4) Recognize the dangers of "false cognates".
Learning Activities:   Due on or before 3/28 
  • Step 1)  Watch and complete the questions embedded in the video on edpuzzle (available below and on Canvas
  • Step 2)   Play the online games listed below (and on the class website) practicing common cognates.  When finished please email your instructor evidence of completion.
  • Step 3) Review the list of Common Food Cognates posted below.  You will need to know some of these for the Cognate exam,  as such you may wish to write down the cognates you are not able to recognize.
  • Step 4)  Review the list of common false cognates posted below.  It is strongly recommend you note the most common as you will need these for the Cognate exam.
  • Step 5) Complete the Cognate exam posted on Canvas.

Play the online games listed below (and on the class website) practicing common cognates.    
  • Step 2 A) ​ In the activity below you are to highlight the words that are the SAME in both Spanish and English.  Good luck.  This is a good place to identify both actual and false cognates.
​Step 2: B)  When completing the Spanish Matching activity below, be sure to email a copy of your results to your instructor:
